ORANGUTAN FEEDING TIME
Feeding is still conducted in Centre to supplement the wild food for all the orangutans in the Reserve because 653 hectares forest does not have enough food for the orangutans that roam free and easy. In the rain forest, food is scarce and the orangutan with its large body has a large appetite. This results in low population densities of around 2.6 animals per sq. mile (1 per sq. km). Near the swamp forests and river valleys with greater resources, densities increase to 18/sq. mile (7 per sq. km).
**Note that sighting of individual or group of orangutans is not always guaranteed during feeding times.
In Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, we are only supplementing whatever available food found in the Reserve. We feed them with sweet potatoes, banana, coconut, papaya, oranges, sugar canes, pineapples and hard boiled eggs. After the fruiting season in the month of November to March, we give them deworming pills dissolved in milk.
Not all the orangutans come to the feeding platform as those who are capable of foraging for food on their own would give the free meals a miss. This would demonstrate the success of Semenggoh as a Rehabilitation Center if more and more orangutans do not show up at feeding times. When the fruits are not in season then more of these animals would turn up. Therefore it depends on luck and the seasonality of fruiting to be able to see the orangutans as they are not kept in cages and shown as exhibits as in a zoo. Feeding times offer visitors a chance of viewing the orangutans at close range for a long period of time. It also offers a unique wildlife experience and excellent photo taking opportunities.
